The underrepresentation of women in the blockchain space can be literally explained by the historic dominance and marginalization of their male counterpart in STEM and financial industries. Currently, women account for roughly 10–30% of the total workforce which is still far from being equal.

Prior to 2018, there was relatively low presence of women in the blockchain industry. Hope Liu, the founder of eximchain in an interview with CNBC reported that just 2 speakers in group of 42 were females at a blockchain conference she attended in japan that same year.

However, in the recent years, we have recorded a surge in women participation in the world of blockchain as a report revealed that the number of women in blockchain technology has grown from 8% to 12% in the past two years. Women now holds strategic positions and key decision making roles in new projects. Leading companies such as Binance and Bincor also support the diversity campaign as about 40–50% of their employees are women.

World renowned women also contribute globally to gender equality in the blockchain industry, such as Olayinka Odeniran, who founded Black Women in Blockchain in 2018 after attending the North America Bitcoin Conference in Miami that year. Another woman is Manasi Vora, the founder of Women in Blockchian, who left her job in 2017 to pursue crypto full-time after which she launched an organization focused on increasing diversity in the crypto space by providing educational resources.

A recent study revealed that women hold about 8.3% of their savings (men save only 7.9%), this shows that women have more power to diversify their investment into higher return asset like cryptocurrency. Women are community builders and change makers and we’ve seen a lot of manifestations already all we need to do is to encourage and support them, we need to celebrate and highlight those that are already leading in the space to inspire others to join.

Final Thought

Blockchain and Web3 are still in their infancy period and there are endless opportunities for early adopters. If women dare claim their space, they have golden opportunity right now to shape it to their liking and eliminate gender disparity.
